PRESBİYOPİ
What is presbyopia?
In order to provide a solid vision, the light coming from outside must be concentrated on the retina and refracted by the cornea and the eye lens. However, when the eye lens loses its flexibility, Presbyopia occurs as a result of the cornea losing its flexibility and the ability to focus on nearby objects decreasing depending on the patient's age.
Causes of presbyopia:
Presbyopia is a physiological disorder that occurs as a result of aging. Presbyopia occurs especially between the ages of 35-40 and continues to progress until the age of 60, this problem can occur in every person as a result of aging and continues to progress as standard, for example, from the ages of 35-40, the difficulty of seeing near objects increases by more than +1 degree every 10 years, but as the number of degrees increases, the problem increases by +2 degrees after the age of 50 and +3 degrees in the age of sixty. These are statistical information.
Presbyopia symptoms:
The first symptoms of presbyopia are discomfort when reading small print at the age of 35-40, discomfort when reading for a long time or getting tired quickly when focusing for a long time and being able to read sections when the eye is far away. People with presbyopia have blurred vision, when approaching objects more than 50 cm.
How is presbyopia treated?
There are several common methods used in the treatment of presbyopia. The most common therapies used in the treatment are; multifocal intraocular lens surgery, presbyLASIK and Corneal Inlay (Mixed), and the doctor decides on the best operation according to the patient's condition.
In multifocal intraocular lens surgeries, the eye lens that has lost its flexibility and effectiveness is replaced with another manufactured lens. One of the advantages of multifocal eye surgery is that it reduces the risk of Presbyopia to zero.
Presbyopia multifocal intraocular lens surgery is a very simple procedure performed under local anesthesia. The operation and preparation take approximately 1 – 1.5 hours and then the patient can return to normal social life. After the operation, the patient should carefully use the eye drops prescribed by the doctor.
presbyLASIK is a Presbyopia treatment performed using laser, as in laser operations, the corneal layer is changed with laser beams and allows for near vision, however, this Presbyopia procedure may carry the risk of not returning to its former state, therefore it cannot be applied to all patients. Only the doctor can determine this method for patients.
Corneal Inlay (Mixed): Presbyopia cannot be treated by surgically removing the existing lens, but is treated with a micro implant placed in the outermost layer of the cornea and the operation ends. The implants placed are called Kamran inlay, and are one of the newest and most successful methods.
